The Rule Of Three - Helping Your Dog Connect The Dots

Dogs, like humans, learn best when we see a pattern.  Responding to an undesired behavior and immediately moving on is merely a reaction to a behavior, which at the very least can be confusing, while three times, one right after the other, is the mathematical minimum required for a recognizable pattern and, therefore, a lesson. Always attempt to trigger the undesired behavior, pairing it with an appropriate response three times in a row.

The Rule of Three, when used in training, is also useful in informing the “teacher.” If, after three repetitions, a dog isn’t making an incrementable improvement, it is almost always for two reasons.

1.  What is being asked of the dog is too much and needs to be parsed into smaller steps.

2.  The “teacher” didn’t have enough of the dog’s attention.
