New To Their Home Adult Golden Retriever Won't Poop On The Grass

The older a dog gets the harder it can be to get the dog to transition from one way of going to the bathroom to another (transitioning from pee pads to yards, or vice versa, or used to eliminating on the grass and needing to eliminate on the sand, gravel, or dirt).

Recently Acquired Adult Cocker Spaniel Is Fearful Of His New Male Owner

This fear/anxiety issue is more common than you might think and usually entirely avoidable. Often people think it's due to the dog being abused by what it fears, but the truth is the problem is almost always due to a breeder's neglect to provide appropriate exposure at the correct age, and then failing to inform the new owners of the limited window to complete proper imprinting.

About the show

If you become a regular ‘Ask The Dog Guy Pawdcast’ listener, you’ll quickly begin to wonder if the majority of dog training content found on the Internet and provided by the amateur dog training world hasn’t been based on a belief that the Disney movie the ‘Lady and The Tramp’ was a companion dog behavior documentary. 😄

After listening to a few episodes, where various training issues are reviewed, you’ll come to learn that companion dog training has historically not been driven by the sciences related to behavior (ethology, evolutionary psychology, and biology, sociobiology, anthropology, etc.) and that it rarely holds up to critical thought or passes the filtering of cognitive bias and logical fallacy.

It will start to make sense as to why so few dogs come away from what their owners are told are ‘obedience’ classes at best doing a ‘trick’ called obedience, instead of a useful life skill. You’ll instead learn that there is, in fact, a treat addiction-free/brutality-free way to train a dog to be able to ‘Stay,’ ‘Come’ and “Heel’ – No Matter What, and far more effective strategies for addressing behavior problems.

The fact is that companion dog training has been driven, not by science (although they often claim it is) but by well-meaning people that confused their love of dogs with being an ‘expert in all things dog’. In time most settle into one of two ‘camps.’ The most common of the pseudo-science ideology camps embraced by the amateur dog training world is the ‘All Positive/Purely Positive/Force-Free/Never Say No/R+…’, treat, treat, treat and to a lesser extent, its polar opposite, the ‘Might Is Right,’ Alpha, Pack Leader, Dominant (Yank and Crank) ideology.

I think you’ll find that the Ask The Dog Guy Pawdcast provides a wonderfully refreshing contrast to the above through an embracing of science, common sense, and humor.

I hope you become a regular listener and even better embrace one of the ways to support this pawdcast, and by default science and common sense in companion dog training. (Patreon/Buy Me A Coffee)

John 'Ask The Dog Guy' Wade

I have been teaching companion dog owners and their dogs full-time for over 30 years. I’ve written quite a few books which you can find here.

I designed a dog training collar that you may have heard of, The Power Steering Dog Training Collar (aka The WadeCollar) which is more for those dogs that have a physical edge over their owners.

Pre-covid I (and will again post-Covid) toured around doing a very fun and entertaining seminar for companion dog owners called, ‘Why Your Dog Doesn’t Listen and What To Do About It‘.
